The Association of Veterinarians of Quebec warns the population once morest buying a pet as a Christmas gift due in particular to the numerous responsibilities that this implies over a long period.

“Having a pet is an investment over fifteen years that requires a lot of self-sacrifice and money,” explains Dr. Michel Pépin. Unfortunately, you have to choose the animal sparingly.”

“Maybe [pour] “A bird, a dog or a cat would suit you more, but those who are going to give you the gift may think the opposite,” he continues. So we clearly have to know our tastes and what we want to do with this animal for the next 15 years.”

Same story at the Montreal SPCA, which suggests the public come as a family to one of the branches to choose the animal, because not all animals react the same way depending on the family.

The financial aspect must also be taken into consideration when choosing a pet.

For a dog or a cat, more than $2,400 per year must be set aside to ensure they are offered quality basic care.
