From d’avril 2024motorcycles and scooters will have to pass a mandatory technical inspection, just like quads and cars without a license. Now that we know the points that will be checked during this essential inspection for all owners of two-wheeled motorized vehicles, it is time to prepare for spring 2024. Here is a summary of the main information to know.
Inspection schedule according to year of registration
- In 2024, the first vehicles affected by technical inspections will be those registered before 2017.
- In 2025, this concerns vehicles registered between 2017 and 2019.
- In 2026, technical inspections will affect vehicles registered between 2020 and 2021.
For all those registered following January 1, 2022, the inspection date must be set within six months before the expiration of a period of four years from their first registration, and every three years therefollowing. As for light vehicles, a re-inspection may be necessary within two months, while a technical inspection of less than six months will also be required if the vehicle is sold.
Control centers ready for new legislation
Karine Bonnet, CEO of the Dekra brand and president of its network in France, assured that the control centers will be ready for this new measure. According to her, 80% of officials interviewed responded that they would begin inspections. For the leader of one of the main brands on the market in France, this measure poses no problem; she even justifies it:
“It is normal to inspect category L vehicles such as cars (VL) and trucks (PL). »
No official sound level meter validation yet
Good that no sound level meter has not been approved for the implementation of the measure, and that this noise control will therefore be at the discretion of the inspector, Karine Bonnet confirms that for the centers, carrying out this new technical control for motorcycles and scooters will not require a significant investment, but rather moderate.
Reactions from biker associations and call for boycott
While the measure is now officially established, many biker defense associations intend to continue the fight by different means. Thus, until progress is made on this point, some encourage their members, and more broadly the motorcycling community, to boycott technical inspection centers which will start carrying out inspections for motorcycles and scooters next April, including Dekra.
