As outbreaks of anthrax and another potentially unidentified disease have led to nearly 1,200 suspected cases and 20 deaths in five African countries, the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) is calling on wealthy countries to ensure equal access to health goods such as diagnostics and vaccines to ensure that outbreaks can be identified and stopped immediately.
“The anthrax outbreak is another example of why we need more equity, not more charity, for global health. As long as some places have all the resources to respond and others don’t, we won’t have a truly functioning pandemic preparedness. We “We have seen this with COVID-19 and the lack of vaccines for Africans as wealthy countries have hoarded them, along with the know-how and technology to produce much-needed goods,” said Dr. Penninah Iutung, Head of the AHF Africa Office. “Lower-income countries will continue to suffer from preventable disease outbreaks until big pharmaceutical companies and rich countries value lives over profits. We call on pharmaceutical manufacturers like Emergent BioDefense Operations Lansing, maker of the anthrax vaccine, to ensure appropriate treatment for affected regions Doses and diagnostic kits are available.”
Anthrax is a disease caused by bacteria commonly found in soil and can be transmitted to livestock and people through inhalation or consumption of food or water contaminated with spores, or through cuts in the skin. It can be prevented by vaccinating people and livestock and is not contagious, except in rare cases of cutaneous anthrax.
