Ivorian-French banker Tidjane Thiam was elected Friday evening president of the Democratic Party of Côte d’Ivoire (PDCI), the main opposition party, a victory which allows him to consider being a candidate for the next presidential election in 2025 .
Tidjane Thiam was elected very comfortably at a party congress in Yamoussoukro, the Ivorian capital, with more than 96% of the votes once morest the mayor of the Abidjan commune of Cocody Jean-Marc Yacé, according to the results announced late Friday evening.
More than 6,000 congresspeople were called to vote in Yamoussoukro on Saturday and were able to accomplish their duty at the end of the day, without major incident. Participation reached 64%.
With this election, the PDCI, the main opposition party which has around sixty deputies, hopes to rejuvenate its image. The party was led by Henri Konan Bédié, who died in early August at the age of 89, who did not rule out running in the 2025 presidential election.
