After so much waiting, the elections ended on Thursday evening, to elect the president of the Democratic Republic of Congo for five years. After seven withdrawals, nineteen candidates in total were in the running for the presidential election.
On Wednesday, general elections (presidential, legislative, provincial and local) were organized in the Democratic Republic of Congo. On the day, several polling stations for the elections opened late following multiple logistical problems across the country. These elections have been extended for Thursday.

In total, 19 candidates were in the running for the presidential election. The outgoing president, Félix Tshisekedi, in power since 2019, is seeking a second candidacy alongside the 18 other candidates, facing an opposition which has denounced “chaos” and “irregularities” and which has not been able to agree on a common candidate to tackle this single-round election. Among the 18 countries there is Moïse Katumbi, former governor of the mining region of Katanga (south-east), Denis Mukwege, won the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize for his action with women victims of war rape, and Martin Fayulu , 2018 presidential candidate who claimed that Félix Tshisekedi stole his victory in the election.
Didi Manara, second vice-president of the CENI, declared that the vote would end well into the evening of Thursday and that the very first partial results of the presidential election would be published this Friday.
However, the government was satisfied with the conduct of the elections which were organized by the CENI, and it congratulated the Congolese people for their mobilization and commitment.
Moreover, the electoral campaign was particularly affected by security in the east of the country, where tensions reached a peak in two years with the resurgence of the M23 insurgency, supported by Rwanda. However, some opposition candidates have been accused of being outsiders of the country, a truly powerful weapon to discredit them in a country marked by years of conflict.
