Who has never counted down the days to eat a Christmas cookie? Christmas is always full of traditions like those we see in movies and fill us with joy and hope and one of them is the magic of making, decorating and presenting Christmas cookies to the people we love.
A party in the kitchen
How many films did we watch in the Afternoon Session during Christmas week where the family gathered around the kitchen to prepare the dough while children made a mess decorating the already baked cookies. So I take advantage of the week before Christmas and invite you to participate in this experience.
The Magic of Preparation
Before entering the kitchen, this experience already requires you to run to stores that sell Christmas products and get aprons decorated with the theme so that everyone gets in the right mood, decorate the kitchen with garlands and prepare your cell phone for lots of selfies. I already anticipate that this will end with everything and everyone covered in flour, but I also guarantee that this unique moment will be marked in the memory of the little ones.
The Art of Decoration
Prepare the colored icings with lots of red, green and white so that everyone has room for creativity, separate the confectionery and watch with lots of love the magic of Christmas emerges little by little as creativity awakens, following all, Christmas cookies have these powers .
Gifts with a Flavor of Affection:
It’s been a long time since I’ve been giving cookies to friends around here. Lis loves going with her cousin at her grandmother’s house to make cookies that they distribute to the whole family with great pride in the work of art, following all, who doesn’t like receiving a gift made with care and also very tasty?
The Traditional Recipe
For years I made this Christmas gingerbread cookie recipe the way it appears in the movies, I used doll cutters and everything, it was always a success because it was the “movie experience”, so here we go:
Gingerbread Cookie Ingredients
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons of powdered ginger
- 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder
- 1/2 teaspoon powdered cloves
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup butter at room temperature
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 ovo
- 1/4 cup honey (can be molasses)
Way of doing
Preheat the oven to 180º while in a large bowl mix the wheat flour, ground ginger, cinnamon and cloves (but they have to be powdered) and salt.
In another bowl, beat the butter until creamy, then mix in the brown sugar and beat until you have a very light mixture. Then add the egg and honey, beating everything until smooth, take the bowl of dry ingredients and add it little by little, always stirring to avoid lumps.
Make balls, knead them and if you have a cutter, now is the time, otherwise shape them as you wish. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper but leave room for the cookies to rise. Bake in the preheated oven for regarding 10 to 12 minutes or until the edges are golden.
Then place them on a rack to cool and when they are completely cold, it’s time to call the children to the party with the confectionery and decorations, easy right?
My Christmas Cookie Recipe
I prefer this recipe because it is more “Brazilian”, it is more popular, perhaps because it doesn’t have the “spiciness” of ginger. Children like it more, so I started doing it like this:
Tati’s Cookie Ingredients
- 1 and 2/3 of wheat flour;
- 1/2 cup refined sugar
- 100g salted butter (salt enhances the sweetness)
- 1/2 col. vanilla essence (tea)
- 1 small beaten egg
Icing Ingredients for your Christmas Cookie:
- 1 cup. (tea) powdered sugar
- 1 col. (soup) lemon juice
How to do it, I’ll put a video here that shows you step by step how I do it and the simple way I decorate it.
