New cycle path connects Raasdorf with Vienna

St. Pölten (OTS) – The now completed pedestrian and cycle path between Raasdorf and Vienna along the state road L 2 (Breitenleer Straße) was implemented as a joint project between the state of Lower Austria, the city of Vienna and the municipality of Raasdorf. Yesterday, December 21st, numerous representatives from politics, the community, the Lower Austrian road service and the city-surrounding area management of Vienna/Lower Austria officially handed over this cycle path connection. Cyclists therefore have a safe connection without having to use the L 2 state road, which has an average traffic volume of around 12,000 vehicles per day. This walking and cycle path connection begins at Friedhofweg in Raasdorf and runs north of the L 2 state road to Schafgarbenweg in Vienna, where it is connected to an existing cycle path.

In addition, a connection to the public bus lines 24A and 89A in Neuessling was created. The new footpath and cycle path also serves as a connection to tourist destinations (Marchfeld Canal). In the municipal area of Vienna, this creates a cycle path connection to the center of Donaustadt and subsequently to the city center. The new cycle path is part of Vienna’s main cycle path network.

The 1,720 kilometer long walking and cycle path section (part Lower Austria 1,460 kilometers, part Vienna 0.260 kilometers) north of the state road L 2 (Breitenleer Straße) was built using an appropriate construction structure. A green strip up to three meters wide serves as a demarcation from the L 2 state road. The walking and cycling system was designed to be up to three meters wide. Due to local conditions, the system only had to be built over a short length of around 50 meters and a width of two meters, with a concrete barrier to separate it from the road.

The trees provided by the Austrian Federal Gardens were planted along the pedestrian and cycle path with the participation of landscape architect Stefan Schmidt. The total costs amount to around 560,000 euros, with around 360,000 euros being borne by the state of Lower Austria and the municipality of Raasdorf and 200,000 euros by the city of Vienna.
