British Government Scraps Dependent Visa Income Limit: Relief for Immigrants and Locals

London – The British government has scrapped the income limit for the dependent visa following widespread protests. The current minimum annual income of £18,600 will be reduced from £38,700 to £29,000 from April. In the current lower income limit of up to ₹18,600, there will be no ban on applying till April. The government backed away from the decision to sharply raise the income limit for dependent visas for foreign workers following strong protests not only from the immigrants but also from the locals.

However, the government has warned that there will be an increase in the income limit for dependent visa applicants in the future. But the reduction announced now is a relief to those renewing dependent visas. Apart from opposition parties, even the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, raised criticism following raising the income limit. The archbishop criticized the new decision as dividing the families of ordinary people. The restriction introduced as part of the new immigration policy was widely considered to lead to severe human rights violations.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had said that changes would be made in the new announcement as strong protests were raised in Parliament. The resignation of Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick also dealt a blow to the government. Although it was Home Secretary James Cleverley who raised the income limit, the new decision was announced by Lord Sharpe Epsom, the Home Office minister in the House of Lords, rather than the Home Secretary. Sharp Epsom said the new income limit would initially be reduced to £29,000 but would be gradually raised to £38,700. The next step is to raise it to £34,500 and then to £38,700. But it is not clear when the increase will happen.

The preliminary assessment is that the government’s move to reduce the income limit will not bring much benefit to Malayalis. The reason for this is that those who arrive on a care visa and student visa cannot bring their family members on a dependent visa. NHS workers are exempt from raising the income threshold to bring in family members. But carers working outside the NHS may be unable to bring dependents due to income limits. The fact that even British citizens married from abroad might not bring their spouses was the reason for the strong protest once morest the new policy. But there is still criticism that the current cut minimum salary threshold of £29,000 is out of reach for most family members.
