Eleven people were killed and dozens injured in shootings at Charles University in Prague. The shooter was also among the dead, a spokeswoman for the rescue service said on Thursday followingnoon, according to the CTK agency. Interior Minister Vit Rakusan said on public television that there was no longer any threat to the public. There is no evidence of a second shooter. Rakusan nevertheless called on the population to follow police instructions.
According to initial information, the incident is said to have occurred at the Philosophical Faculty of Charles University on Jan-Palach-Platz. Humanities are taught there. The police were on the scene with a large contingent, including special forces. Jan Palach Square is located just a few hundred meters from the famous Charles Bridge, the city’s landmark on the Vltava. In a video by a user on X, people might be seen fleeing over the Charles Bridge, which is very popular with tourists. The accompanying text stated that they moved away from the shots that might be heard nearby.
The police called on people to avoid the area. Residents should not go out of the house. Photos showed students leaving the university building with their arms raised. The university sent an email to employees to take cover and lock the doors. According to a report by the TV station Nova, the shooter is said to have been on the roof of the faculty building. An explosion was also heard.
There was initially no further information regarding the suspected shooter or a possible motive. Students and staff at the university said on social media that they had barricaded themselves in lecture halls and offices. People should now be brought out of the building one by one. The rescue service sent several ambulances, emergency doctors and a large ambulance to the scene.
