Polster sued ÖFB for recognition of international matches and goals

The former Austrian soccer star Toni Polster has sued the ÖFB before the Vienna Regional Court for Civil Law Matters for recognition of national team appearances and goals. The lawsuit was “placed under the Christmas tree” for the association, Manfred Ainedter told the APA on Thursday. The lawyer represents Polster in this case with his law firm Ainedter & Ainedter as well as the law firm Haslinger/Nagele. The ÖFB now has four weeks to file a response.

Further details regarding the procedure will be available on December 28th (11 a.m.) at a press conference with Polster, Ainedter and another lawyer, Alexander Hiersche, at the regional league team Wiener Viktoria, where the 59-year-old ex-striker works as a coach.

The lawsuit relates to three matches that are considered unofficial international matches and cushions are therefore not counted. Specifically, it is regarding the games Liechtenstein – Austria (0:6 on June 7, 1984 in Vaduz, one cushion goal), Tunisia – Austria (1:3 on February 7, 1987 in Tunis, two cushion goals) and Morocco – Austria (3-1 on February 2, 1988, no cushion goal). These games do not appear in the ÖFB international match statistics – the match in Vaduz is also not officially recognized by the Liechtenstein association, probably also because there were wild changes. Alfred Drabits, for example, was swapped out and swapped in once more in this match.

As things stand, Polster has a record of 44 ÖFB goals in 95 international matches. If Polster were credited with the three goals, he would have extended his credit to Marko Arnautovic. The Inter Milan legionnaire has 36 goals. “But that has absolutely nothing to do with Marko or that I fear for my goalscoring record. This is simply an injustice that stinks to high heaven and that I would like to have corrected,” Polster told the APA in November. If he is surpassed by Arnautovic, “I will be the first to congratulate him,” promised the Viennese.
