SAN DIEGO – Boise State women’s basketball came up short in its first game of the San Diego Winter Classic, losing to UC San Diego, 62-56.
Three Broncos (8-4) scored in double figures in the contest, led by a season-high 16 points from Mya Hansen. Elodie Lalotte added 14 points while Natalie Pasco netted 13.
The two teams went back and forth early, exchanging six lead changes and four ties in the opening quarter. Hansen scored six points in the period while Lalotte added four as Boise State led 14-12 following one.
The Tritons (4-6) opened the second quarter on an 8-3 run to take a two-point lead. After Hansen tied the game from the free throw line, Pasco hit a 3-pointer to give Boise State the lead. Erin Conron hit a layup with a minute in the half, but the Broncos remained ahead, 23-22, at the break.
Hansen scored the first four points of the second half, then dished out an assist to Lalotte to put the Broncos up seven. The Tritons cut the lead to four midway through the quarter, but a corner 3-pointer from Mary Kay Naro pushed the lead back to seven. UC San Diego stormed back, ending the quarter on an 8-0 run to hold a one-point advantage into the final quarter.
Abby Muse scored four points in the first two minutes of the quarter, but the Tritons added on a six-point lead. The Broncos clawed back, with Natalie Pasco finishing a fast break layup to cut the Triton lead to one with 3:52 left. UC San Diego hit back-to-back 3-pointers on its next two possessions to take a 51-44 lead with 2:48 on the clock.
Lalotte converted a 3-point play to cut the lead to four, but the Tritons responded by scoring on their next two possessions to take a 9-point lead with 50 seconds left. The senior scored another layup on the next possession and the Broncos forced a jump ball on the other end. Trailing by seven, Hansen drew a foul and cut the lead to five at the free throw line with 19 seconds left. UC San Diego solidified the game from the charity stripe, making all six of its free throw attempts in the remainder of the game to come away with the win.

– Abby Muse also moved into fourth-place in Mountain West history with 216 career blocks. The senior passed Hillary Carlson (Wyoming, 2007-11), who blocked 212 shots with the Cowgirls.
– Muse blocked six shots in the contest, marking the fourth time this season and the eighth time in her career that she has blocked six or more shots in a game.
– Mya Hansen went 10-of-10 from the free throw line, marking the second time in the sophomore’s career that she has made 10 or more free throws. Hansen went 11-of-11 last season once morest BYU.
– On top of scoring a season-high 16 points, Hansen also tied her career-high with seven rebounds.
– Elodie Lalotte recorded her first double-double of the season and the 15th of her career. The senior’s 10 rebounds were a season-high.
– Muse moved into seventh place in the program’s single-season record book with 45 blocks. The senior set the single-season program record last year with 93 blocks in a single season.

Boise State will play the final game of its nonconference schedule, Wednesday, Dec. 21, once morest San Diego. The game will tip off at 5 p.m. MT and will be broadcast on ESPN+ and 670 KBOI AM.
