The Russian automobile industry is working to demonstrate the country’s sovereignty. The Aurus Motors brand was already its showcase, and the Russian government regained control of the country’s main manufacturer, AvtoVAZ, sold by Renault following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. And although the energy transition is not the priority of the Russian automobile industry, certain initiatives are nevertheless emerging.
This is the case of an electric vehicle prototype presented by the Moscow Polytechnic Institute (MAMI), developed at the request of the Avtotor company. The latter has in the past produced cars for Hyundai, Kia, BMW and other international manufacturers at its plant in Kaliningrad, a city located in a Russian exclave between Poland and Lithuania.
The car presented has a very particular design, which does not seem to have been designed to appeal to the public. This prototype actually has a technological demonstration objective. The main components it carries would have been developed and produced in Russia, including its motor, its inverter, but also its battery.
Production planned from 2025
Although this prototype still seems very far from commercialization, Avtotor plans to mass produce electric cars from 2025 under its new Amber brand. Fortunately, the final car should not resemble the prototype presented here. The Moscow Polytechnic Institute also showed other vehicles: an electric quad and a prototype of an autonomous shuttle, which for the moment looks more like a soapbox.
It is worth noting that another Russian electric car initiative is running parallel. Initiated by the heavy goods vehicle specialist KamAZ, the project, now led by the startup Kama, plans to develop a whole range of electric vehicles. A prototype of its first model, the Atom, has already been presented. This is a city car that seems much closer to mass production than Amber’s prototype.
