Recently, a rare case of a woman in her 40s whose uterine lining fell out was revealed.
According to the British daily Daily Mail on the 19th, an unidentified 43-year-old Mexican woman experienced the terrible experience of having her endometrial tissue expelled all at once.
This woman, who had severe lower abdomen pain, thought it was just severe menstrual cramps, but went to the emergency room following abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding continued for two hours. As a result of the test, medical staff confirmed that blood and body tissue were coming out of the woman’s vagina. The lining, which was similar in shape to the uterus, came out all at once.
According to reports, this phenomenon is not common, but mainly occurs in women aged 20 to 40. Pregnant women who have experienced an ectopic pregnancy, which involves implantation in a place other than the uterus, and birth control pills related to progesterone can cause these symptoms.
The woman in the story was not only over 40 years old, but also had no particular health problems in the past. I have had regular periods as well. She had three pregnancies, but she delivered by cesarean section and did not experience an ectopic pregnancy. The medical staff who treated the woman said, “This phenomenon is not dangerous (to the extent of life-threatening), but it is rare,” and added, “The incidence rate is even lower in women over 40 and there are almost no reports.”

The story was published in the American Journal of Case Reports, an American SCI-level journal specializing in case reports.
The symptom experienced by the woman is called Membranous dysmenorrhea. A woman’s uterine lining thickens in accordance with her menstrual cycle, and if she does not become pregnant, the thickened tissue is discharged through menstrual bleeding. Unlike normal menstruation, catarrhal dysmenorrhea causes bleeding and pain as tissue produced by the hardened and thickened endometrium is expelled.
The exact cause has not been revealed, but it is known to be related to progesterone. If the levels of progesterone, which helps a woman become pregnant, are too high or too low, the uterine lining can thicken. Failure to become pregnant during this period may lead to menstrual cramps.
Christine Greaves, an obstetrician and gynecologist in Orlando, USA, said, “Decubitus dysmenorrhea is very similar to a replica of the uterine wall,” and added, “The tissue produced by devitalus dysmenorrhea is mixed with mucus and blood and must be removed.”
