“Every year once more…” not only the Christ child but also the fire brigade come out during the Christmas season. In the event of an impending Christmas tree fire, according to Günther Schwabegger, the prevention work has already been effective. However, the press spokesman for the Upper Austria Fire Prevention Agency (BVS) believes there is too little awareness of the danger posed by candles of any kind and shape. “Around 100 such fires are recorded every year and unfortunately these statistics do not change,” says Schwabegger.
Never leave candles unattended
The fires, triggered by tea lights, memorial candles and Advent wreath candles, are currently in peak season, with half the annual number occurring in the weeks surrounding Christmas. In order to avoid fires starting, it is important to never leave candles burning unattended, to keep the distance from other flammable objects large enough and to be particularly careful when dealing with animals or children in the house. If the flames are detected early and extinguishing equipment, such as a jug of water, is “reasonably within reach,” Advent wreath fires usually end lightly.
Things look different when the Christmas tree catches fire. “If extinguishing agents are not available, you have no chance. The tree can be fully on fire in just ten seconds,” said Schwabegger during a live demonstration at the BVS on Tuesday. In such a case, you should leave the room as quickly as possible, close the windows and doors and alert the fire department.
LED as a safe alternative
Schwabegger cites LED fairy lights as a safe alternative to candles. “If the quality is right, there is de facto no risk of fire with the LED light chain. It does not get too hot and does not have high voltages,” says the BVS press spokesman.
