The Yankees announced on Tuesday that they have claimed Colombian Jeter Downs from the Nationals’ waiver list.
In this way, the 25-year-old infielder joins the team of the player who served as the inspiration for his name, Derek Jeter, who was captain.
Downs had the opportunity to meet Jeter in 2020 during a TopGolf event.
“Was [surreal]. “He has been my idol my entire life,” Downs expressed at the time. “I finally got to meet him and talk to him a little bit. He was special.
Downs was originally drafted by the Reds in 2017 and subsequently traded to the Dodgers in 2018. He was then a central part of the mega-trade that sent Mookie Betts from the Red Sox to the Dodgers. Alex Verdugo was another of the pieces of said exchange. Now, both meet once more in the Bronx.
The native of San Andrés has not been able to establish himself in the Majors yet, totaling only 20 games between the Red Sox and Nationals. He was designated for assignment on December 12 by Washington.
