Numerous flashing lights and a large police deployment might be observed at Place de la Digue, in downtown Charleroi, next to the Christmas market this Tuesday morning. The GSA (Surveillance and Support Group) intervened with riot shields, bulletproof vests and semi-automatic weapons pointed at a building adjacent to the square. What happened ?
A passerby saw two people walking around the square with weapons and raised the alarm.
Immediately, the police deployed a large device “to see what was going on”, reports Laurent Van Doren, head of the ZP Charleroi. Hence the deployment of the GSA. “We were finally able to arrest the two people… who were walking around with fake weapons! We will have to clarify the situation, in particular why they were doing this, but the incident is closed.” More fear than harm, therefore. And fortunately.
