After four years of repeated trials, the case between the Apple firm and Corellium is finally coming to an end, according to Forbes.
Corellium is a company operating in the IT security sector, and provides tools to developers and schools. It is particularly known for offering virtual replicas of devices and operating systems, including iPhone and iOS.
Important fact: a year before the trial in 2018, Apple tried to buy Corellium for $23 million.
First complaint in 2019
In this case, it was Apple which initiated the first complaint once morest Corellium, in 2019. It accuses it of copyright infringement, arguing that the latter did not make any license request before to offer iOS virtual machines. The Apple firm subsequently demanded that Corellium stop selling virtual copies of iOS, then expressed its wish to be compensated for the lost profits allegedly generated by the virtual copies of iOS.
Corellium’s argument once morest this accusation is that its device does not break the law. There is a legal provision in the United States that allows the reproduction of copyrighted products or services in certain situations. Providing security researchers with a tool to find possible vulnerabilities on iOS, and therefore by extension to strengthen user security, might indeed be part of this. In any case, this is the argument put forward by Corellium, and which the American justice system has validated on numerous occasions.
Apple loses, appeals, then rebels, then gives up
Alone once morest everyone, the Apple firm did not give up in this affair, it tried several angles of attack in order to win this case, but nothing worked.
While the two companies were supposed to have reached an agreement in August 2021, Apple ultimately wanted to continue the lawsuits and filed a new lawsuit a week following the talks.
More than three years later, the two parties seem to have reached an agreement, the nature of which is unknown, and Apple has finally abandoned all proceedings. Given the technical capabilities of Corellium, and the network surrounding it, we can imagine that it may have been able to satisfy Apple in a certain way.
