Raising Awareness of Invisible Disabilities in France: The Impact and Challenges

2023-12-19 15:19:45

According to APF France Handicap, 12 million people have a disability in France. Among them, 9 million are said to have an invisible disability. They are affected by an illness which is not seen by the general public, but which nevertheless remains very debilitating on a daily basis. Today, 80% of recognized disabilities are so-called invisible, specifies APF France Handicap.

Invisible disability can have diverse origins and once more concerns very diverse disorders. It may be linked, for example, to a sensory deficiency which will affect hearing. It can also be linked to an alteration of intellectual, psychological and/or cognitive functions. This is the case for autism, dyslexia or even bipolarity, for example. This may also concern musculoskeletal disorders or a disabling and/or chronic illness such as diabetes, fibromyalgia, Alzheimer’s disease, etc.

Frédéric Michel has an invisible disability. He became visually impaired overnight. His life changed in just a few minutes. Today, he tries to raise awareness among the general public regarding these invisible disabilities. To do this, he decided to get on a bike and take a tour of France to meet the general public. Having left Auray, in Morbihan, in Brittany, last June, he returned to his starting point at the beginning of September, following having covered more than 6,000 km, independently.
