Four out of ten Belgians claimed to be experiencing financial difficulties in the third quarter, a stable proportion compared to the previous quarter and down compared to the 44.4% recorded in the third quarter of 2022, according to the periodic survey carried out by Statbel.
“If the regional figures follow more or less the same trends, we notice a difference in level between Flanders on the one hand and Wallonia and the Brussels-Capital Region on the other. Thus, 34% of those questioned in Flanders indicated that they had difficulty making ends meet during the third quarter, compared to nearly 49% of Walloons and Brussels residents”, notes the statistical office.
Social categories also reveal certain disparities since among the unemployed and people unable to work, 74% say they are experiencing difficulties in the third quarter (compared to 71% in the third quarter), compared to around 31% of workers (stable). Low-income people were also more likely to experience complicated ends of the month, going from 58.5% in the second quarter to 66.5% in the third quarter.
Every quarter for two years, Statbel has surveyed some 5,000 Belgians aged 16 to 74 regarding their personal well-being and living conditions. The peak in financial difficulties was observed a year ago, in the fourth quarter of 2022, when 47% of those surveyed mentioned difficulties making ends meet.
