Creality CR-Scan Ferret Pro, the presentation of the 3D scanner

2023-12-19 11:33:06

At the start of 2023, Creality released the CR-Scan Ferret, its affordable 3D scanner for the general public with a price lower than the competition. This product quickly had a successor which added some welcome functions, here is the Creality CR-Scan Ferret Pro. This is perhaps the Christmas gift that will complement a maker already equipped with a 3D printer.

We have already presented the CR Scan Ferret to you as well as its technical sheet. The “Pro” evolution maintains the same hardware architecture with an ASIC chipset and two class 1 infrared sensors capable of scanning at a speed of 30 images per second for rapid scanning of objects. The 2 megapixel camera captures colors at 24 bits (16 million shades).

An autonomous 3D scanner with WiFi

The scanner support is in the form of a handle which can also be used as a tripod. A “Powerbank” type battery is integrated to power the small 3D scanner. For autonomous and portable scanning, connect a smartphone with a reinforced USB-C cable. In use, it’s practical to hold everything in one hand to rotate around a large object or to move forward to capture the slightest textures of a small subject.

A WiFi 6 module integrated into the support allows data to be sent directly to a computer at a high speed.

Two capture modes

The “ferret” (translation of “ferret”) can be configured in two operating modes:

  • Fast wide-range scanning (wide angle)
  • High precision to scan the smallest details

The first will therefore be suitable for large objects without too many textures, the second to capture the precise shapes of figurines for example, down to a precision of 0.1 mm.

The Scan Ferret Pro can be used both indoors and outdoors, adapting to light conditions. But, for best results, it is recommended to benefit from uniform lighting throughout the scanning procedure.

To also improve the result, an optional turntable allows you not to vary the intensity of light by rotating around the subject.

The CR-Scan Ferret Pro differs from its predecessor by the addition of an algorithm which corrects the shaking effect of freehand scanning (“anti shake”). The “Pro” no longer requires the use of a spray to scan black or reflective objects, thanks to the application’s different modes.

Since 3D scanning is not as simple as it might seem, Creality has released a User Manual and tutorials for scanning well on his wiki. Help can be found on the official Facebook group or by going to our forum.
