1961 marked a double success for Chevrolet as the GM division released two of its most iconic vehicles in this pivotal year in its history. Celebrating half a century since Chevrolet’s first combustion-powered vehicle debuted, the brand has reimagined its best-selling Impala. Midway through the model year, the famous antelope received two scarlet letters that would later become legendary: the SS was born, the first supersport in a long line of hot Chevrolets.

The second significant event coincided with the birth of the SS bloodline. The famous 409 V8 saw the light of day. The legendary 6.7-liter engine lived a short life – by 1965 it was already outdated, was discontinued and replaced by perhaps the most iconic Chevrolet engine – the 396 V8.
The Impala Super Sport was unveiled without much ceremony at the end of the year, and production was dismal – 453 SS cars with a galloping antelope on the emblem. Most of them were equipped with a 5.7-liter V8 engine. And only 142 examples rolled off the assembly line with the big 409 producing 365 hp.
Saying they are rare is like saying a circle has no corners. Finding an original car today is an almost impossible task. And here, in front of you, is a surviving Chevrolet Impala SS 409 from the first year of production.
The owner of this jewel purchased it in 1992 at a Barrett-Jackson auction and has barely driven it since. The odometer shows mileage of 6809 km. It’s too good to be true. The ad doesn’t include any details regarding the car’s history. We only know that the car is used only rarely and is driven on average less than 160 km per year.
This rare specimen is now up for sale. They are asking only $108,000 for it. The current owner of this gem is Michael Jordan. He’s not an NBA player, but a professional photographer from Arizona with an eye for fast cars. In addition to this highly desirable SS 409, he has another ’61 Chevrolet.
