The United States will launch a multinational operation to defend the Red Sea amid Houthi attacks on commercial ships, the North American Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, announced on Monday in a statement published on the White House website.
“The recent escalation of reckless Houthi attacks originating in Yemen threatens the free flow of commerce, endangers innocent boaters and violates international law,” the Pentagon chief declared.
According to Austin, the Red Sea is “a critical waterway that has been essential to freedom of navigation and an important corridor” that facilitates international trade.
In this sense, the official urged the international community to “unite to face the challenge posed by the non-state actor [el movimiento hutí] that launches ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles once morest merchant ships of many nations that legally transit international waters.”
“This is an international challenge that requires collective action. Therefore, today I announce the establishment of Operation ‘Prosperity Guardian’, a major new multinational security initiative under the umbrella of the Combined Maritime Forces and the leadership of its Task Force 153, which focuses on security in the Red Sea,” he noted.
The official indicated that the initiative brings together several countries, including the United Kingdom, Bahrain, Canada, France, Italy, Norway, the Netherlands, Seychelles and Spain, “to jointly face the security challenges in the southern Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, with the aim of guaranteeing freedom of navigation for all countries and strengthening regional security and prosperity.”
The international analyst and general secretary of the Latin American Federation of Journalists, Nelson del Castillo, said in an interview with RT that such a decision “may lead to major confrontations.”
