A new Power Metal hope from Finland has awakened and has some legends and traditions for us. And there are now plenty of legendary bands from these latitudes in the genre, but it has long been said that bands from the land of 1000 lakes are reason to be happy.
And that is with the gentlemen of CHAMELION that’s right too. Apparently the project was penned by keyboardist Marco Sneck (AFTERWORLD, POISONBLACKEX-KLAMAH) has been around since 2000, was formed into a band in 2012 and is now finally making its debut with “Legends & Lores”.
And from the first notes it is clear that these are more than talented and experienced musicians who are at work here and why does this singer, who sounds like a lower-pitched Timo Kotipelto, sound so familiar to me? Sure, the Lord once sang the grandiose second work DREAMTALE, called “Beyond Reality”! Singer Tomi Viitola (including ULTIMATIUM, SANTHYR) is joined by a certain Jari Sata, drummer Jane Kusmin (KALMAH, ARMADA NORTH) and Jukka Jokikokko (ZENITH REUNION, ex-BURNING POINT). So the starting position is more than good.
But now it’s finally starting: After the excitingly dark intro “The Conquest”, cool keys, menacing riffs and a fast double bass resound in “Hero’s Tale”, so that you think STRATOVARIUS and RHAPSODY had started a cooperation. Here Nordic melodies meet southern bombast. Nevertheless, as the exciting album progresses, the focus shifts more towards the Finnish part. Haunting vocals that always invite you to sing, grandiose keyboard carpets and fast beats dominate most of the songs and there is absolutely no need to hide from the role model.
For variety there is also the driving power ballad “The Keeper Of The Heart” with a slight Disney flair, the pathetic true metal piece “The Quest” with neoclassical elements. Nevertheless, the aforementioned Italians are also omnipresent in the form of pathos, light and sympathetic kitsch as well as numerous choirs and epic undertones. And so it’s not surprising that with “Glorious Dawn” you have a successful and extremely bombastic long track ready at the end.
It may be that CHAMELION should establish a little more independence for the future, but “Legends & Lores” is highly professional, packed with strong anthems and is simply fun. If you like Nordic, fast Power Metal with a bombastic list, you’ll get the full service here!
