Since the start of the transmission season 2023 and as of December 13, 2023, EU/EEA countries have reported 707 human cases d’West Nile virus infection (virus du Nil occidental) and 67 deaths in Italy (336 cases, 29 deaths), in Greece (162, including 1 with an unknown place of infection, 23 deaths), in Romania (103 cases, 12 deaths), in France (43 cases, 0 deaths), in Hungary (29 cases, 0 deaths), Spain (17 cases, 3 deaths), Germany (6 cases, 0 deaths), Croatia (6 cases, 0 deaths) and Cyprus (5 cases, 0 deaths). Neighboring EU countries have reported 93 human cases of WNV infection in Serbia (91) and North Macedonia (2) and 2 deaths in Serbia (2). In 2022, 92 deaths et 1 112 cas indigenous people had been reported,
During the current transmission season, in the reporting countries, indigenous human cases of WNV infection were reported in 141 different regions, among which the following regions reported indigenous human cases of WNV infection for the very first time: Gironde, Charente-Maritime, Alpes-Maritimes, Charente and Haute-Corse in France, Sömmerda in Germany, Kastoria and Ioannina in Greece, Imperia, Taranto, Lecce, Cosenza, Bari, Salerno and Verbano-Cusio-Ossola in Italy, Gorj and Timiş in Romania, Cáceres, Huelva, Valencia/València, Barcelona and Toledo in Spain.
Since the start of the 2023 transmission season, and as of December 13, 2023, 152 outbreaks in equines et 247 outbreaks in birds have been reported by EU/EEA countries. Outbreaks in equines have been reported by France (44), Spain (37), Hungary (26), Italy (25), Germany (14), Portugal (5) and Austria (1). Outbreaks in birds have been reported from Italy (196), Germany (19), Spain (19), Bulgaria (6), Hungary (3), France (2), Austria (1) and Greece (1).
The last appearance date reported on December 13, 2023 was the November 5, 2023. As weather conditions have become unfavorable in most affected regions and given the current epidemiological situation, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) is discontinuing the publication of weekly epidemiological updates on West Nile virus for this season.
