With iOS 17.2, iPadOS 17.2 and tvOS 17.2, Apple has removed the option to purchase series and films from the iTunes Store apps and is instead redirecting customers to the Apple TV app. Unfortunately, when Apple consolidated purchases and viewing content in the Apple TV app, it also eliminated wishlists – much to the dismay of people who used the feature.
On numerous platforms, including at RedditTwitter and in Apple Support-Forum Users complain regarding the change, which was not informed regarding in advance. Also in the Apple Blog forums MacRumors the reports are increasing. In the Apple Support forum you can read, among other things:
“I just updated to tvOS 17.2 on both of my 4K Apple TVs, the new ATV app is nice and all, certainly faster than the old Movies and TV Series app […]. What I don’t like, however, is that both my wish list (from the Movies app) and my favorites (from the TV Series app) have completely disappeared. I had almost 200 movies in my wish list, and now, nothing, they’re just gone. […] It would have been nice if these features were integrated into the new ATV app and synced with the rest of the Apple ecosystem. […] I will never be able to manually recreate these 2 lists :(“
A user on Reddit complains:
“I checked on iOS and my wish list is completely gone. I’ve been building it for regarding 10 years and it contained just over 400 films. I wish Apple had thought this through better before surprising us with such a drastic change.”
In the iTunes Store app on the iPhone and iPad, as well as in the separate iTunes TV Shows and iTunes Movies apps on the Apple TV, there were options to add shows and movies to a special wish list while browsing, which many people used to do so Save content for later and watch out for offers.
iTunes apps already disabled in beta versions of iOS/iPadOS/tvOS 17.2
Wishlists haven’t been transferred to the Apple TV app with recent updates, so some people who had compiled long watchlists won’t be able to access those lists or copy them to a new location. Some users can open the iTunes Store app on iOS devices and tap the button in the top right corner to see their wish lists – although this process doesn’t seem to work for everyone. Whoever compiled the lists on the Apple TV appears to have no way of accessing them.
With tvOS 17.2, iOS 17.2, and iPadOS 17.2, there is a “+” button that can be used to save content for later viewing, but this just adds it to the “Up Next” feature, which can be a little more cluttered than one traditional wish list.
With tvOS 17.2, Apple disabled the separate iTunes Movies and iTunes TV Shows apps during beta testing. The option to purchase shows and movies through the iTunes Store app on iPhone and iPad was removed through a server-side update at the time of the release of iOS 17.2 and iPadOS 17.2. It is not yet clear whether Apple will reintroduce wish lists in some form in view of the angry customers – this step currently seems unlikely. There were similar complaints when Apple removed App Store wishlists with iOS 11, but that feature hasn’t been reintroduced either.
