Thrissur: A two-year experiment at Peachy Forestry Research Center has patented low-carbon, eco-friendly sandalwood. The formulation is prepared from the bark of Litzia decanensis plant in Nelliampathi and Chinnar. It is more flexible and reliable. Litzia decanensis is found in the forests of southern India and Sri Lanka. The experiment was on 45 plants.

The bark of the Litsea glutinosa plant was formerly used. As its availability decreased, powder was brought in from Malaysia and Vietnam. After that, it is made by kneading it, smearing it on a bamboo stick, drying it and applying scent to make a tiri. Incense can also be made from the same mixture.

70 percent was wasted while making bamboo sticks. But with the discovery that bamboo powder, charcoal and kuzhampaki can be used, the use of wood will be reduced to half of what it is now.

Burning time is 40 minutes

A new wick will burn for 40 minutes. It is 20-25 percent more than the ones in the market. Dr. said that carbon emission is less in the experiment in wicks 10 cm long and 3 mm thick. R. Jayaraj, Unnimaya Ravindran, Dr. VB Sreekumar, Dr. Shyam Vishwanath and found.

Carbon emissions (parts per million ppm)

Current: 2600-3600
Average in new: 2000

“There is a plan to transfer technology and create plantations of Litzia decanensis”.
