The Veterinary Research Institute stated that since the outbreak of African swine fever in China in 2018, it has started testing illegal meat seized at the border. This time, for the first time, two different genes were simultaneously detected in crispy sausages illegally brought in by travelers from mainland China. Types of African swine fever virus, one is the traditional second genotype African swine fever virus strain that has been prevalent in China since 107, and the other is the new gene recombinant African swine fever virus.

However, this new recombinant virus is a completely new virus produced by genetic recombination of the low-virulence genotype 1 virus introduced from Portugal following the outbreak in mainland China and the traditional type 2 virus as a vaccine. China confirmed the first case of a new virus in 2022, and later discovered it in Jiangsu, Henan, Inner Mongolia and other places. Experiments have confirmed that this recombinant virus is highly pathogenic and transmissible. According to literature, there are now vaccines that use the second gene to remove the virulence gene. All have been confirmed to be unable to protect once morest the new African swine fever virus. Serious epidemics caused by this new virus are currently reported in China. If it spreads to neighboring Asian countries, it may set off another wave of African swine fever.

The Veterinary Research Institute stated that as of December 15 this year (112), a total of 1,733 illegally carried illegal meat products at the border had been inspected, of which 1,374 were from China, accounting for 79.3%, and African swine fever was detected. The virus positive rate is still as high as 12.4% (171 cases), which is significantly higher than the positive rate of 9.9% and 11.8% for Chinese meat products at the border in 2010 and 2011. It shows that the African swine fever epidemic in China is still very serious and shows no signs of easing. .

The Veterinary Research Institute calls on Chinese New Year to be approaching, and Chinese people have the habit of giving gifts during the New Year holiday. The eve of the New Year is the peak period for seizures of illegal meat products at the border. Chinese people should not bring livestock products and processed products containing pork when they return to the country to avoid violating the law. Don’t just take chances and try to get through through parcels and express delivery. We must keep African swine fever out of the country, work together to protect Taiwan’s pig industry, and let the braised pork rice continue to be fragrant.
