Cells capable of sensing and reacting to tiny reliefs in their environment

The researchers studied the microscopic deformations of the cell membrane, often caused by the extracellular matrix, the more or less raised and therefore rough support on which the cells adhere, using artificial supports. They then observed that cells might perceive deformations, modify the organization of their skeleton and that “this reorganization might influence the functioning of certain cell surface receptors, directly impacting the behavior of cells”. These results also highlight the role of BAR domain proteins, specialized in cell membrane remodeling, in this process.

“By modulating the surface relief of implants, it is possible to modify the way in which our cells will interact with them, and thus promote their acceptance by the body while reducing undesirable responses such as inflammation,” specifies ‘team. This work might thus contribute to cancer research, because tumor cells are often subjected to great mechanical constraints, or in the development of prostheses and implants.

The study was led by Benjamin Ledoux, research logistician within the Morph-Im platform at UNamur, supervised by Professor Pierre Morsomme (Louvain Institute of Biomolecular Science and Technology – UCLouvain) and Professor Henri-François Renard (Research Unit in Animal Cell Biology (URBC) – Narilis Institute – UNamur). This work was also carried out in collaboration with David Alsteens from LIBST (UCLouvain), Christine Dupont-Gillain from IMCN (UCLouvain) as well as the universities of Geneva (Switzerland) and Gyeongsang (South Korea).
