It brings your ceramics back to life.
In the family, we restore
We are artists, in the Jaillette family. With this nuance that we do not create work. We take them back, we repair them, we give them new life… We restore them, that is. Dad undoubtedly instilled something in his children, he who restored the paintings. In siblings, everyone has their own domain. François, his part is ceramics. Ceramics, you know what it is: all objects made from terracotta. Porcelain, pottery, sandstone, earthenware… Objects, beautiful and bearers of stories and History which often suffer the ravages of time. Terracotta breaks. Like glass. And François is here to fix that.

Apprenticeship at the Sèvres Manufacture
So, when he was a kid, François didn’t dream of becoming a footballer or a firefighter. He wanted to become a ceramic restorer. So he learned the trade. To the Sèvres factory, notably. Where he stayed for a while. Here he was manufacturing. The production followed it for 3 or 4 years. Then, around the mid-80s, he got into the restaurant business. The restoration is beautiful. An object that we thought was lost, and now our terracotta surgeon arrives with his fingers full of magic.

Meilleur Ouvrier de France
François obtained recognition in the early 1990s. In the Best Workers of France competition, he presented a punch bowl. Look at the item, it’s like new. Except that when the artist undertook to restore it, it was in a thousand pieces. A real puzzle. But there were pieces missing from this puzzle. Which François had to recreate. Until the drawings. Look closely at this bowl, you’d think it came straight from the manufacturing workshops. We only see fire there, it is so impeccable.

Repairing an old jug
We all felt like healers. And, we all took out our tube of glue to repair an old jug that was dear to our hearts. And we all saw the result! The burrs, the shifted pieces. The repair made it look much worse. And, all sheepish, we hid our jug. Let the friends not be the laughing witnesses of the massacre. There is indeed a solution… A ceramic restorer. A Francis. You can always say you did it yourself. Not sure we believe you!
It’s fine, the restoration. The tools are just as important © Radio France – Fred Romanuik
