”The strong candidacy of Rajae Maouane will bring new energy to this list which will complement the experience of Gilles Vanden Burre, federal deputy since 2015 and current leader of the Ecolo-Groen group in the Chamber. A diverse duo, full of ideas and full of desire to improve the daily lives and the future of all Belgians, from Ostend to Arlon, via Brussels!”, writes Ecolo in its press release.

The choice of Ecolo activists is surprising: at the end of October, Zakia Khattabi, federal Minister of Climate and former co-president of the party, announced in La Libre that she would be head of the Federal list, specifying that she wanted to regain her freedom of speech .

Zakia Khattabi wants to put an end to her secrecy: “Co-president, I was presented as radical. It was still much more effective”

Zakia Khattabi will therefore leave the federal level since she will ultimately be head of the list in the Region, and is therefore positioning herself as Brussels minister-president candidate. Alain Maron, current Brussels Minister of Energy and leader of the Greens within the Brussels government will only be second on the list, ahead of Barbara Trachte, Brussels Secretary of State for Economic Transition.” Three ministers in office who put their strength and skills at the service of the environmental project to make Brussels a greener and fairer region,” write the environmentalists in their press release.

The choice was made smoothly, we are assured at Ecolo. “Contrary to what happened among the socialists during the same morning,” quips an environmentalist.

Contacted by La Libre, both Zakia Khattabi and Alain Maron claim to have accepted, in the name of the collective and with a light heart, the choice that the activists made when drawing up the lists. Zakia Khattabi, even though the Federal government had her preference, allowed herself to be convinced. Alain Maron, for his part, assures that he has always considered that the federal Minister of Climate was the best candidate to draw the regional list.

Zakia Khattabi “very moved”

“I am very honored by the trust placed in me by both the activists and the outgoing team,” commented Zakia Khattabi in this press release. “Very moved too: I have always spoken of Brussels as my heritage, my only one. My father is one of those who built this region with his hands, literally, it’s more than a slogan. As Minister of Climate, I understand how the climate crisis is in fact the social issue of this century. Environmental justice and social justice are inseparable. And this is fundamental in Brussels. Finally, from the federal level, I measured how little attention is paid to our Capital Region: the distribution of the recovery fund, the European transition fund (the objective alliance of the two other regions on the back of Brussels ) or around the management of the Gare du Midi. That’s enough ! It is time to speak out loud and clear regarding Brussels and take its rightful place across the country. This is our ambition, this is why the three of us are mobilizing.”
