The most important achievements of the “Climate Summit” for the UAE and all of humanity is that the “COP28” agreement came following a series of pledges; They included plans to triple the production of renewable energy sources, double efficiency measures, by 2030, and boost nuclear power.
Note that the “COP28” conference is the first conference in which the move away from “fossil fuels” was explicitly included in the text of the final decision.
Although some may think that it is unreasonable for an oil country to sacrifice a major income, the leadership of the Emirates decided to be a role model for the world, and this is integrated with ambitious projects that enhance the quality of life, national well-being, and enhance global energy security, with a variety of solutions. Sustainable and safe for generations to come, some of which will ensure that the UAE remains a reliable platform for global energy security.
The results of the twenty-eighth session of the Conference (COP28) represent a major victory, and it is worth celebrating the historic agreement on financing losses and damages, accompanied by an implicit recognition of the importance of climate financing, to the point of allocating a center for climate financing in the green zone, adjacent to the energy transition platform. The results also set a practical path for the future. For climate action, the numbers revealed countries’ commitment to achieving this ambition, but we all aspire to more.
The commitment to the energy transition and transition away from fossil fuels (which has been adopted for the first time), admittedly; A courageous step and a leap, which gave priority to human interests over regional or local interests, and no country, other than the UAE, had previously put its humanitarian obligations before its own interests, to the point that the summit decisions came to be the most important set of decisions since the “Paris Agreement.” The countries agreed on a common diagnosis of the problem: “fossil fuels.” The result may be stronger in the next steps of the summit, or with international frameworks that contribute to achieving more comprehensive goals, as the presidency of the UAE climate summit will continue to work for a full year until the presidency is handed over to the next session.
International commitment and support came in various forms, the most obvious of which was the Brazilian President’s powerful speech at the COP28 conference on climate action and military spending.
Accordingly, it is expected that in Brazil in 2025, we will observe the development and formulation of stronger pledges that give precedence to the interest of humanity and the sustainability of life over minor or temporary interests. But we must ask: Will we see in Brazil a stronger and more severe description of uncivil operations that do not only kill people? And even environmental pollution?
This is what we hope for.
