A NASA telescope captured the largest solar flare in years on Thursday. The event temporarily jammed radio communications on Earth.
The Sun spewed out a huge flare accompanied by a huge radio blast on Thursday, causing two hours of radio interference in parts of the United States and other sunlit parts of the world. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientists said it was the largest eruption since 2017, and the radio blast was large in scale, affecting even the highest frequencies.
Many pilots reported communications disruptions, the impact of which was felt across the country.
This event was classified in category X.28, the most powerful on the NASA scale. The least powerful category is B, then comes C and so on.
The flare occurred in the northwest part of the Sun. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory captured the action in extreme ultraviolet light, giving the image that blue tint. The powerful surge of energy appears as a huge flash of light.

Indeed, the Sun is currently in a very active phase. It is regarding to reach the peak of its approximately 11-year solar cycle. Peak sunspot activity is predicted for 2025.
The effects of these explosions may take a few days to reach Earth. The coronal mass ejection of December 14 reached our planet on Sunday, specifies the Met Office. The British National Weather Service is expecting a minor to moderate geomagnetic storm whose effects might last 2 or 3 days. But it might also give rise to beautiful northern lights at relatively low latitudes.
