The bubble season is well and truly open: family meals, office parties… Any occasion is good to enjoy a glass of champagne.
This is part of our traditions during the end of year celebrations, we often open a bottle of champagne to open the festivities as an aperitif or once the clock has struck twelve. However, it may happen that the bottle is not finished. In this case, you have to figure out how to preserve it so that it doesn’t lose its sparkle. Although everyone knows that it must be put in the fridge, there is however a common mistake that should not be made.
The mistake we all make when storing an open bottle of bubbles
Among the grandmother’s tips that don’t work, here is one: putting a small spoon in the bottle of champagne to preserve the bubbles and thus keep it longer. And it’s a habit that many people have gotten into.
Gérard Liger-Belair, research physicist who heads the Effervescence, champagne and applications team at the University of Reims explains: “The little spoon is a legend. People think it works because you usually put your bottle in the refrigerator. But the fridge is cold and prevents movement. This is what allows the champagne to be kept for approximately 24 hours. The little spoon doesn’t change anything. »
To preserve your bottle, the only thing that can preserve the taste and the sparkle is to put an airtight cap. Sold in most stores, it will allow you to keep consuming the bottle within 48 hours. Beyond that, the taste may be altered.
