The Swiss team – beaten by Sweden on Thursday (2-4), the Czech Republic on Saturday (2-3 following extra time) and Finland on Sunday (3-4 following), began its third and final match of its tournament at home in Zurich on the wrong skate: Patrick Fischer’s group conceded a first goal following 196 seconds, on one of the first shots aimed in the direction of the Swiss goal.
And it was already 0-2 for the Finns following less than 15 minutes of play, when goalkeeper Joren van Pottelberghe (the other HC Bienne goalkeeper, Harri Säteri, started in the Finnish camp) was surprised with far too much lightness from behind the net.
A Swiss reaction? Yes, it did take place: in the form of a happy goal (from the skate) signed by Christoph Bertschy 94 seconds following the second Finnish success (16th, 1-2). After this ordinary start to the match, the Swiss finally stepped on the accelerator in the second period.
Thürkauf double
Everyone recovered in the Swiss camp, starting with goalkeeper van Pottelberghe. And the efforts of Patrick Fischer’s players were rewarded by the equalizer from HC Lugano captain Calvin Thürkauf on the numerical superiority.
The best scorer in the National League championship (36 points in 30 matches) exploited a rebound granted by Säteri following an instant recovery from Sven Andrighetto (36th, 2-2). Trailing once more since the 51st minute (2-3), the Swiss team once once more found a way to equalize. Thürkauf scored twice on a numerically inferior counter-attack (52nd, 3-3).
The Finns secured their victory in overtime thanks to a success by Jere Innala in the numerical superiority following a Swiss penalty due to overcount (65th, 3-4).
Six defeats in six matches
After losing its three matches during the first stage of the Euro Hockey Tour in November during the Karjala Cup in Finland, the national team raised its head somewhat in Zurich, even if the balance sheet is still not resplendent (three defeats, including two following extra time).
Above all, it remains without a victory this season following the first six preparation matches for the 2024 World Championship in the Czech Republic. The next international meeting will take place at the beginning of February with the Beijer Hockey Games tournament in Sweden.
