In the suspense film genre, the Marenda-Lacan Cinéplanet complex knows how to do it.

This Saturday, December 16, during a preview visit in the presence of Jean Leonetti, mayor of Antibes, the operator Philippe Borys-Combret was able to keep his audience in suspense.

On the agenda: turnaround and cliffhanger (in the English terminology of works of fiction, type of open ending, left hanging, in order to create a strong expectation).

So, to the fateful question “when will the rooms be open to the public”, the answer is dotted. It will indeed be next Thursday, December 21. As was announced.

But not for everyone. What had not been specified: the public will be select, the evening private. Reserved for the elite of the Riviera cultural world.

So, when will you actually be able to buy a ticket? Again, suspense. “Everything will depend on the security commission on December 19. Perhaps from the 22 or 23”projects Philippe Borys-Combret.

Who is quick to take tweezers: “The opening is intended to be gradual until mid-February and the launch of our most beautiful immersive room equipped with Dolby Atmos.”

In the more immediate future – next weekend – how many of the eight rooms will be ready? “We do not know yet.” Inside the complex (three floors, 4,000m²) reigns the laborious atmosphere of the commotion of combat.

“It’s time for finishing touches,” reassures the manager at the sight of the cables still running on the floor, the speakers still exposed at the feet of the giant screens and the corridors soon to be lit.

Started in January, following delivery of the building delayed by three years, the race once morest time for the developments is coming to an end.

Tour of the places.

1. “The Dolby Atmos”

The screen is as big as a basketball court. The image and sound will be of the highest definition. The cutting edge of technology. The pinnacle of immersion.

“In France, there are only eleven rooms entirely designed for Dolby Atmos. Now, there is one in Antibes”, argues the operator, Philippe Borys-Combret. Technicians from California are still in the process of sound calibration.

In terms of comfort, the two meters of depth between each row of seats contrasts with the narrowness of certain competing rooms.

In this “premium” model, the chairs are even mobile. To enjoy such comfort, count on around 6 euros more on the adult rate of 12.90 euros.

2. “Still under construction”

For now, air hockey tables and pinball machines are sleeping under plastic.

Priority to standards: the safety commission is scheduled for next Tuesday.

The complex should be fully completed by mid-February.

3. “Magnificent panorama”

The roof terrace almost steals the show from the giant screens. A breathtaking view. Everything is there: Fort Carré, Mercantour, Saracen towers, Garoupe.

To take advantage of it, you have to wait until next spring, when the premises will be rented to a restaurateur. Screening sessions under the stars are also planned once summer comes.

4. “Cinema in the city center”

The manager, Philippe Borys-Combret, is a fervent defender of local cinema.

“People prefer to go out in the city center than in industrial areas. And even if it is more complicated to build and develop, the challenge has been met. It only happens once every 50 years.”
