While the relocation of Gwangju-gun/private airport to Jeonnam has been slow, the mayor of Gwangju Metropolitan City and the governor of South Jeolla Province officially agreed on the 17th to promote the relocation of Gwangju-gun/private airport to Jeonnam Muan International Airport.

Gwangju Metropolitan City Mayor Kang Ki-jeong and South Jeolla Province Governor Kim Young-rok met at the Korea Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Trade Corporation in Naju Innovation City, Jeollanam-do at 2 p.m. on this day and jointly announced the agreement on the relocation of Gwangju military and private airports.

The two mayors and governors first agreed to relocate Gwangju Civil Airport to Muan International Airport in time for the opening of the second phase of the Honam High-Speed Railway (KTX). Recently, Gwangju City has expressed its position that it can be relocated not only to Muan (International Airport) but also to Hampyeong. On the other hand, South Jeolla Province has continuously requested the relocation of the private airport to Muan. As a result, the relocation candidate for the private airport has been virtually decided as Muan. However, the terms of this agreement on relocating the civilian airport include a proviso that ‘if meaningful progress is made on the issue of relocating the military airport.’ For Gwangju City, it was assumed that the flow of water for the military airport relocation project must be opened first. In the end, it can be interpreted that the relocation of the civilian airport also depends on actual progress in the relocation of the military airport.

The city and provincial governors also agreed to actively communicate and cooperate together to gain the sympathy of Muan residents regarding the integrated relocation of military and private airports to Muan International Airport. Muan County has consistently opposed the relocation of the military airport. Recently, Governor Kim tried to hold a ‘dialogue with the residents’ with Muan County Governor Kim San in attendance, but the residents who opposed the relocation of the military airport blocked the meeting with their might, so the governor might not attend. According to this agreement, Gwangju City and South Jeolla Province will be able to jointly assist in the relocation of the military airport to Muan, so attention is being paid to whether progress will be made in the future.

Gwangju City then decided to enact a support ordinance that includes accumulating a priority support fund to guarantee the cost of support projects for residents in the relocation area. South Jeolla Province decided to promote policies for the development of Muan County. In addition, Gwangju City and South Jeolla Province decided to hold a joint meeting with Muan County and neighboring cities and counties to revitalize Muan International Airport.
