The RTBF #Investigation program on November 8 revealed high levels of PFAS in the Ecaussinnes territory. The Walloon Region has therefore commissioned the Public Service Scientific Institute (ISSeP) to carry out detailed analyzes of soil, water, vegetable gardens and eggs, particularly in Écaussinnes. While awaiting the results, the Region has recommended avoiding consuming eggs and vegetables from local production.
The municipality of Écaussinnes, for its part, launched a measurement campaign, by a specialized laboratory, of the PFAS content around the Feluy economic activity zone, the largest petrochemical zone in Wallonia. The first results show that no contamination was detected among the local market gardeners who participated in the analyses. “It’s very reassuring for these producers and for their customers,” explained Arnaud Guérard, environmental alderman of Écaussinnes, Friday.
“But egg analyzes carried out in Marche-lez-Ecaussinnes near the Feluy industrial zone show that five of the seven samples taken exceed the regulatory limit for PFAS, i.e. 1,700 ng/kg. The municipality therefore recalls the recommendation of the Walloon Region to avoid consuming eggs and vegetables from personal production, in particular for residents of the streets concerned and close to the industrial zone. We also ask the Region to identify the causes of contamination. It is in fact essential to circumscribe them and issue recommendations to the population.”
