(AFP, Washington, 16th) The United States warned North Korea once more today that any nuclear attack by Pyongyang on the United States would lead to “the end of the Kim regime.”
Agence France-Presse reported that the second meeting of the US-South Korea Nuclear Consultative Group (NCG) was held in Washington yesterday. The two sides reiterated in a joint statement that any nuclear attack by Pyongyang once morest South Korea “will result in a swift, overwhelming and decisive response.”
A statement released by the White House also stated that “the United States reaffirms its unwavering commitment to provide South Korea with a broader range of deterrence tools, supported by the full range of U.S. capabilities, including nuclear capabilities.”
U.S. President Joe Biden issued a similar tough warning to Pyongyang in April. At the time, he said any nuclear attack by North Korea would “lead to the end of the government in Pyongyang.”
Biden’s remarks came five months following U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said that any nuclear attack by North Korea once morest the United States or its allies would mean “the end of the Kim regime.”
North Korea’s Supreme People’s Assembly passed a decree in September last year declaring that it would become a nuclear-armed state. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un also said that this status was “irreversible.”
Last month, North Korea announced that it had successfully launched its first reconnaissance satellite into orbit. Pyongyang has since claimed its satellites have captured images of key U.S. and South Korean military sites.
