Article 41 of the Criminal Act of the Republic of Korea provides for the death penalty. The National Assembly has never touched this law. The deceased couple’s daughter and one-time girlfriend was lured there using her dead mother’s cell phone. When her daughter arrived, in front of her parents’ bodies, he raped her. After the victim jumped out of the veranda, he went back to his room, drank alcohol, and slept.
This is a summary of the crime committed by Jang Jae-jin when he was 24 years old and a college student. The court said of his mentality, “There is great inner malice.” The possibility of rehabilitation and reformation was dismissed. This is why the court sentenced him to death, a punishment that might not be meted out to those who took the lives of many more people.
Jaejin Jang, born in 1990, is 33 years old as of December 2023. He is currently imprisoned in the newly built Daegu Prison. He killed two people and raped one, and is the youngest living unexecuted civilian death row inmate.
Jang Jae-jin was born in Gumi, Gyeongbuk, as the eldest of one son and one daughter. He lived a normal childhood without any financial difficulties under the care of his parents, who worked in the restaurant business. Although his academic performance was poor, his peer relationships were excellent.
He took on the role of an executive leading his classmates. With that experience, he was admitted to the Department of Architectural Engineering at Daegu University through the ‘leadership rolling admissions process’. There is a post he left on the Daegu University community following confirming his acceptance to university in 2009. He wrote that his future dream is to become a civil servant. Nothing has been revealed regarding his records as a freshman. In February of the following year, he volunteered to join the Marine Corps.
During his 1 year and 10 months in the Marine Corps, there was an incident where his inherent violence came out. He was sentenced to one year in prison and two years of probation for brutalizing and assaulting a junior soldier. Details of the violence might not be confirmed. However, considering that he was sentenced to prison for violence during his military service, we can only guess that the intensity of the violence was significant.
After completing his military service, instead of immediately returning to school, he went to work as a production worker at a factory in Waegwan, Chilgok-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and worked for one year and three months. In February 2013, he quit his job and returned to college following three years.
At this time, Jang Jae-jin became a ‘popular person’, as they put it. Instead of studying for his department, he devoted himself to his club and even participated in the activities of the club association and got along with people. In November of that year, he was elected general chairman. It was Jang Jae-jin’s ‘Hwayangyeonhwa (花樣年華)’.

It was also during this time that victim A (19 years old at the time) first met Jang Jae-jin. Jang Jae-jin began dating Mr. A around February of the following year, but their relationship quickly soured. The violence that occurred during his time in the Marine Corps was recreated.

Paranoia grew. He went to see Mr. A once more, saying he would ask regarding it. When her mother, C, learned of this, she complained once more by phone to Jang Jae-jin’s parents. Her parents told Jang Jae-jin, “Quit school and get a job.”

Then I calmly watched TV. Then, I picked up Mr. C’s cell phone and sent a KakaoTalk message to Mr. A. As if my mother was sending it.
That night, Mr. A finished work and came home past midnight. He opened the front door and saw his father, Mr. B, lying covered in a blanket and bleeding. Jaejin Jang’s explanation of the time of his arrest is as follows.
“I knew I was going to get caught, so I went home, had a drink, and tried to turn myself in. Before returning to my room, I stopped by the supermarket and bought two bottles of soju, one plastic bottle of beer, and snacks, and then went to my room and ate them. There was no ‘death penalty’ in his mind. During the first trial, he did not submit a single statement of remorse. September 18, 2014. The Western Branch of the Daegu District Court sentenced him to death rather than life imprisonment. On the day the maximum sentence was handed down, he was alone. When the death penalty was handed down, he changed his mind.
From November 25, 2014, when the appeal trial was in progress, to April 7, 2015, reflection statements were submitted to the court 67 times. Jang Jae-jin’s parents also pleaded for leniency, blaming themselves for failing to properly educate their children. The only thing he wanted was to avoid the death penalty.
However, the appellate court’s decision was also that “the original trial’s death penalty decision was justified.”
Among the rulings, there is an assertion by the court that completely dismisses the possibility of Jang Jae-jin’s rehabilitation.

The Supreme Court decision was the same. On August 27, 2015, the death penalty sentence handed down to those suspected of murder, quasi-rape, theft, injury, assault, and causing death by confinement was confirmed. Eight years have passed since the death penalty was confirmed. Jang Jae-jin is alive and serving his sentence. Just as he had expected and hoped.
