The new PC chips unveiled by Intel this Thursday are mostly “Made in Europe”. At the end of September, the American giant’s Irish factory began producing Intel Core Ultra processors with the new Intel 4 manufacturing process, which uses EUV (“extreme ultra violet”) technology from the Dutch ASML to achieve engraving finesse of 4 nanometers – the minimum ever reached by Intel for commercialized chips.

Located in Leixlip, near Dublin, this new production unit cost nearly 17 billion euros. It symbolizes the desire of Pat Gelsinger, CEO of Intel since February 2021, to refocus the production of the most advanced chips in Europe and the United States, while Southeast Asia today concentrates three quarters of semiconductor manufacturing worldwide.
