Bald people or people with thinning hair have a higher risk of skin cancer. Dermatologists warn that having a more exposed scalp and more delicate skin increases the chances of developing this type of tumor.
In addition to the delicacy, the top of the head, along with the face, are the main places hit most aggressively by the sun, as they are constantly exposed, and therefore suffer more from the appearance of cancer.

Artificial intelligence detects 100% of skin cancer cases
“The lack of hair exposes the scalp directly to the sun’s rays. Threads are protection for the head, just as clothes form a suitable layer for our bodies to protect us and prevent the sun from affecting our skin. Hence the need to apply sunscreen to the head even on bald people”, explains dermatologist Bethânia Cavalli, from Hospital do Servidor Público Estadual, in São Paulo.
Bald people must reinforce exams
According to Bethânia, the fact that the top of the head cannot be frequently examined by the person themselves also contributes to the risk. Therefore, she may only notice spots or wounds that appear in this region late.
“Skin self-examination is effective, but there are parts of the body that our eyes cannot reach, which is why you need to visit the doctor every year if you are someone at risk. The sooner the diagnosis is made, the greater the chances of a cure”, he warns.
Protection includes the use of caps and hats, especially on the beach or in environments with excessive sun. Bald people should also use sunscreen on the top of their head as a skin care strategy.

Exaggerated and unprotected sun exposure throughout life, in addition to episodes of sunburn, is the main risk factor for skin cancer. According to Inca, there are several types of the disease, which are generally classified as melanoma and non-melanoma.

Non-melanoma cases are more frequent and have high cure rates. Furthermore, this is the most common type in people over 40 and with fair skin.

Melanoma, in turn, has fewer registered cases and is more serious, due to the possibility of spreading to other parts of the body. That’s why it’s important to make periodic visits to the dermatologist and ask regarding suspicious signs.

Despite being a health problem that can affect anyone, there are profiles that are more prone to the development of skin cancer, such as: having light skin, hair and eyes, a family history of the disease, having multiple moles on the body, be an immunosuppressed and/or transplant patient

According to experts, it is important to investigate whenever a mole or mole has asymmetry, a rough or irregular border, two or more colors, has a diameter greater than six millimeters, or changes size over time. All of these signs may indicate the presence of melanoma.

The first signs of non-melanone tend to look like a lump, spot or discolored sore that does not heal and continues to grow. Furthermore, it may also appear smooth and shiny and/or resemble a wart.

The mole can cause itching, crusting, erosions, or bleeding over weeks or even years. In most cases, this cancer is red and firm and can become an ulcer. The marks are similar to scars and tend to be flat and scaly.

According to the National Cancer Institute, non-melanone tends to be completely cured when detected early. It rarely develops in other parts of the body, but if not identified in time, it can spread to deeper layers of the skin, making treatment difficult.

The diagnosis of skin cancer is made by a dermatologist through a clinical examination. In certain situations, it may be necessary to carry out an examination known as “Dermatoscopy”, which consists of using a device that allows you to visualize layers of the skin not seen with the naked eye. In more specific situations, a biopsy is necessary.

Recommendations for preventing skin cancer include: avoiding exposure to the sun, using sunglasses with UV protection, as well as umbrellas, umbrellas, wide-brimmed hats and clothing that protects the body. In addition, of course, to the daily use of sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or more.

Skin cancer
Skin cancer can appear in two forms: melanoma (which can metastasize and reach deeper layers of the skin) and non-melanoma (more superficial). Non-melanoma is the cancer with the highest incidence, but the one with the lowest mortality if treated properly.
The main causes of the disease are recurrent excessive exposure to the sun without adequate sunscreen protection, as well as a family history of relatives with cancer. People with light skin and hair are most likely to have the disease.
