Specialists warn about the appearance of diseases such as fungi and bacteria in the lots after increased rainfall

2023-12-16 17:03:00

After three years of drought consecutively, the last rains brought the necessary humidity to think regarding the development of outstanding crops in soybeans and corn. However, good soil humidity can bring regarding the development of diseases, which will force the agricultural producer to be attentive to making investments to avoid losses in the yield that the field needs so much in the next summer campaign.

For this reason, Roberto De Rossi, agronomist, phytopathologist and specialist in the management of diseases in extensive crops at the Catholic University of Córdoba, urged production to “be very attentive” during the next thick campaign to carry out the necessary controls and monitoring. to avoid losses in yields, so necessary for agricultural production that was seriously damaged by drought during the last three agricultural cycles.

“There can be rainfall above the historical average, and we know that with more humidity, the crops get more sick, not only with fungi, but with bacterial diseases. Therefore, we must be closer to the field. Disease monitoring “It is essential” during the current agricultural campaign to avoid loss of yields, he explained in dialogue with the program “Aire de Campo”, which is broadcast on Radio Perfil.

Soil and disease management

Regarding the 2022-23 campaign, De Rossi assured that the current agricultural cycle starts from a “better” situation than the one that existed on the same date in the last three campaigns, and explained that the thick campaign and the fine harvest “took a long time.” with a totally different perspective and reality, since today we are going through a month of December that has much greater humidity both in precipitation and relative humidity.

“This causes a corn and soybean campaign to start, and also summer crops, with other conditions than previous years. These make us think regarding a better perspective, since we will see crops that will develop in superior environmental conditions. Perhaps This makes us think that diseases may appear, which requires monitoring the crop to avoid loss of yield as a result.

The specialist highlighted the need to carry out correct monitoring of the cultivated lot to not be surprised by the appearance of diseases that ruin the next harvest.

“These types of issues – said De Rossi – are what must be anticipated, since we come from campaigns affected by the dry season, and where the plots showed crops that suffered water stress. Although, it is expected that from December 2023 to February By 2024 there will be national rainfall that will be around the historical average or higher, we know that when there are conditions of high humidity the crops tend to get sicker, and for this reason we call for being closer to the field. There monitoring is essential and should be take a closer look at the lot.”

For this reason, the specialist commented that this campaign might have the presence not only of fungi, but also bacterial diseases in the plots due to excess moisture in the soil. There, from a technical point of view, producers are urged to take into account the prior management that will be granted to the plots to be cultivated, since the same results are not obtained on soils where soybeans are rotated on soybeans, or corn on soybeans. corn.

Measure the damage

De Rossi assured that agricultural production is measuring the damage caused both in quality and in yields: “we continue working along these lines of evaluating the damage recorded throughout the country, in recent years, and in many groups of producers. We know that the producer has to think regarding many things at the same time, and it is much easier to make decisions when the specific problem is seen. It is easy when you walk the field and detect insects, but with diseases, such as tiny organisms, and the causes can be confused, it is difficult for the producer to visualize it and even more so to quantify the causing dynamics,” he expressed.

“The producer cannot take into account the energy that the plants spend to fight once morest diseases and defend themselves once morest harmful organisms. This means that for a week, work is done poorly, and the metabolism changes. Damage by an insect can, for example, This makes it much easier to become visible, but not the impact of fungi or bacteria, until it is perhaps too late. The energy it spends to defend itself is measured: we know that there are diseases in soybeans, they cause a loss of between 5 to 10% of the yield. And in corn, also the same,” said De Rossi
