Olympic champion Alessandro Hämmerle clinched his 16th victory in the Snowboard Cross World Cup on Saturday. The Vorarlberger prevailed in the final in Cervinia following a photo finish decision once morest the Australian Adam Lambert. The 30-year-old achieved his last World Cup triumph to date in the Italian town exactly a year ago, but that was followed by a difficult time with a number of injuries.
Now Hämmerle is back at the top. “It was extremely close, I’ve never seen such a close photo finish. Luckily I got down without falling,” said the 2021 vice world champion in his first reaction. “To be on top once more is wonderful.” Going into the Christmas break as the overall World Cup leader is “a dream” and “a nice snapshot. But the overall World Cup is only at stake at the end of the season.”
Hämmerle’s compatriots Andreas Kroh, David Pickl, Jakob Dusek and Julian Lüftner already failed in the quarter-finals. In the women’s race, Pia Zerkhold came third in the small final and ninth overall, while the Swiss Sina Siegenthaler celebrated her debut victory in the World Cup.
