“The painting has only been published twice to date, always in black and white: in the artist’s catalog raisonné and on the occasion of its sale in 1958, which brought it into the private collection where it remained until now,” recalls The Orsay museum on his site.
Recently restored, this painting by the master of Impressionism was produced in 1897. It belongs to a series on the Upper Normandy coast and its cliffs studied on around forty canvases, none of which previously appeared in the museum’s collection. d’Orsay.
“Bathed in an iridescent light, this view of the cliffs of Dieppe observed from Val Saint-Nicolas, near Pourville, unfolds before our eyes a vast marine landscape, punctuated on the right by rocky promontories whose curves and counter-curves contrast with the horizontal line of the coast fading into the distance,” describes the Musée d’Orsay.
