Sonder El Camino: a colorful electric gravel bike with a wide choice of transmissions

New electric model from the Sonder brand, the El Camino electric gravel can be configured in eight different variants. Enough to finely choose the nature of the transmission with equipment from Shimano or SRAM.

British, the Sonder firm – not to be confused with the Sondors two-wheelers – is finally launching into electric bikes. Accustomed to muscular mountain bikes, roads and gravels, the company has chosen to launch into electrification with an electric gravel bike. Named El Camino, it’s actually quite close to the Camino, one of Sonder’s muscle gravels.

The advantage of this electric gravel bike is that it is available in eight versions. Unlike other brands, these versions do not necessarily allow you to upgrade the equipment, but rather allow you to freely choose the nature of the transmission. The rest of the configuration then remains common to these different variants.

The Sonders El Camino uses the same thin aluminum frame with a carbon fork. It would be as cut out for long distances as its muscular sidekick, riding on in-house Alpha EX wheels and Goodyear Connector 700Cx45 tires.

The new Kynamic engine on the program

Its electrical part is made up of a motor that we told you regarding two months ago, the brand new Kynamic BC250. In the rear position, it replaces the usual Mahle beloved of electric gravels, delivering 45 Nm of maximum torque and with a small display on the upper tube. Its battery integrated into the tube and non-removable has a capacity of 250 Wh, i.e. “70 km in real conditions” in mode 1, and approximately 32 km in mode 3. Sonders adds that a second 180 Wh battery will be available from June 2024.

For transmission, it will depend on your expectations or preferences. The Sonder El Camino offers the SRAM Apex1, Rival or Force 1 Hydraulic groupsets (including brakes) as well as the Shimano Tiagra Hydraulic 10-speed, 105 and GRX 810 or 812.

Lots of customizations for this gravel bike and a version flatbar

Highlight of the range, the eighth version with SRAM Apex 1 groupset is not a real gravel bike but a flatbar. The Sonder El Camino Apex1 Flat Bar therefore has straight handlebars, more classic for those riding this type of bike on a daily basis.

It is also capable of lowering the initial price of the electric gravel bike at €3,549, the “real” gravels start at €3,749 in Tiagra and reach €4,449 in SRAM Force 1. Each time, it is possible to choose between 3 colors (blue, gray, orange) and 4 sizes (S to XL) . In addition, Le Sonder can customize its version: handlebars, stem, seat post, saddle, suspended fork, tubeless wheels and even the color of the handlebar tape.
