This year you will pay considerably more for special Christmas products in the supermarket. The prices of products such as Christmas wreaths and ragout are now more than 10 percent higher than at the end of 2022. It is striking that much meat has not risen in price.
In mid-December, NU.nl once more visited several large supermarkets to do some shopping towards Christmas. A limited selection of groceries shows the inflation of Christmas dinner. We previously wrote that the natural Christmas tree is regarding 7 percent more expensive this year, while the artificial Christmas tree has actually fallen in price.
First of all, the Christmas wreaths. A pack of 200 grams of different types of Christmas wreaths costs 2.49 euros at Albert Heijn, 14 percent more than at the end of last year. And at Jumbo such a suit costs 2.39 euros, even a third more than a year earlier.
A Christmas stollen is also more expensive. At Jumbo, a luxurious party loaf with almond paste of 750 grams now costs 3.99 euros. That is 50 cents more than in 2022. At Albert Heijn, PLUS and ALDI the (starting) price of the clot is exactly the same, although Albert Heijn and ALDI still offer a discount. Albert Heijn then charges 1.99 euros and ALDI 2.49 euros.
Gourmet food is not more expensive
For the Christmas meal itself, it is striking that much meat has not risen in price. That’s lucky for people who enjoy old-fashioned gourmet cooking. Meat dishes at Albert Heijn and Jumbo are exactly the same price as last year. This also applies to products such as a duck leg, diamond tenderloin or quails at Albert Heijn.
The tenderloin and salmon have risen in price. At Albert Heijn a piece of tenderloin costs 9.49 euros. The kilo price of 67.79 euros is 13 percent higher than at the end of last year. PLUS charges a much lower price at 10 euros for a piece of 200 grams (49.99 euros per kilo).
A pack of 100 grams of smoked salmon at Albert Heijn costs 50 cents more than last year at 4.49 euros. Jumbo still charges 3.99 euros, but now has a smaller package (90 grams) on the shelves. PLUS also charges 4.49 euros and ALDI 3.69 euros.
Do you fill your pies with ragout at Christmas? Last year, 400 gram cans of chicken ragout were on the shelves for 1.39 euros. Albert Heijn and ALDI now charge 1.59 euros. Jumbo and PLUS charge 1.51 euros for this. Just like last year, a Unox can of veal ragout costs 1.99 euros. Although the supermarket has increased the price by 30 cents, it is now offering a 30 cent discount once more.
Herb butter is actually cheaper
A small windfall at the checkout is the herb butter. Just like regular butter, it has now become more than 10 percent cheaper following significant price increases at the end of last year. For 1.25 euros you get a pack of 100 grams at Albert Heijn, PLUS and ALDI. Jumbo charges 1.24 euros.
A white baguette at Albert Heijn is exactly the same price as last year at 69 cents. Are you buying a bake-off baguette? Then you pay 75 cents for a pack of 300 grams at Albert Heijn, Jumbo and PLUS. That is 10 cents (15 percent) more expensive than last year.
Bottles of mulled wine are a third more expensive
Do you like to drink a glass of mulled wine around Christmas? Then you will face the biggest price increase. The prices of liter bottles have risen by approximately 31 percent at the largest supermarket chains. You pay regarding 80 cents extra for prices ranging from 3.15 to 3.32 euros.
