“Common sense argues for a merger, as is permitted in Flanders. We sometimes hear regarding mergers of municipalities. I believe that before proceeding with mergers of municipalities, it would be obvious to start with mergers of services. This is, in practice, what we did in Braine-l’Alleud, which saved us more than 500,000 euros per year. Services that operate in a collegial manner require less spending. For example, we only have one telephone exchange; we use fewer photocopiers; we have merged several services such as personnel services, with a single department head instead of two.“
