The Kazan Aeronautical Plant (KAPO), located regarding 700 km east of Moscow, is expected to begin deliveries of the first Tupolev Tu-214 in 2024, a company representative told Interfax.
The Tu-214 is a twin-engine narrow-body aircraft derived from the Tu-204 (210 passengers, radius of 6,500 km). The TU-204 was developed during the final years of the Soviet Union and first flew in 1990. The first Tu-214 didn’t take off until 1996, but both had a very limited production run of around 100 units. The Kazan aeronautical factory is therefore today tasked by the Russian government with assembling 70 TU-214 aircraft to replace the A320 and 737, now out of reach due to Western sanctions. From 2025, Russia plans to produce this medium-haul model at a rate of ten aircraft per year. By 2027, there should be 20 per year. By accelerating production of the Tupolev Tu-214, the country wants to resolve the problem caused by Western sanctions.
But the Russian model also has foreign components. They need to be replaced. The public technology group Rostec now announces that it has started producing high-precision sensors for the Tu-214 navigation system. They would determine the direction the plane was moving and its position. Similar products have already proven themselves with the Beriev Be-200 and theIlyushin Il-96Rostec said.
