Mumbai: The biggest clash to happen in Indian cinema in recent times is this Christmas. The films are Shah Rukh Khan’s Dunki from Bollywood and Pan Indian film Salaar from Telugu. Due to post-production delays, the Salaar team might not meet the original release date of September 28 and was considering Christmas. Salar will arrive on December 22nd and Dangi on December 21st as per the latest announcements.
Now the box office trade analysts are calculating who will get the upper hand in this clash. They put forward many criteria for that. Shahrukh’s last two films Pathan and Jawaan collected Rs 100 crore worldwide on their opening days. It also created records at the Indian box office. Similarly, Prabhas’ Adipurush had a record opening on the first day before the negative report.
So, box office experts say that a film with stars with such a strong track record clashing during a major holiday season will do harm. According to film trade analyst Ramesh Bala, “Weekend opening for both the films will be slightly lower compared to the solo releases. Both the films are likely to grab each other’s business and it is unlikely that there will be any record numbers at the box office on the first day. Solo releases usually break records.
There will be no Jawan, Pathan, or RRR level openings for these films. But in the long run these films will be a big hit if they get good reports. But it will totally depend on the content”.
At the same time, with the current distribution and star presence, it is expected that Dunki will dominate in North India and Salar in South India on the first day. Shah Rukh is a big star in the Hindi belt and hence has already secured more screen presence in North India. According to trade analyst Atul Mohan, Shah Rukh, who has scored two consecutive 1000 crore hits, will get more screens than Prabhas’s Salaar, which has a background of consecutive flops. That will lead to more shows for Shahrukh’s film and better first day business. At least the first weekend will be dominated by Dunki.
On the other hand, Salaar will get more theater in South India. Dunki has no Tamil and Telugu dubbed versions. That means they are not targeting tier-2 and tier-3 centers in South India like Jawan did. That is good for Salar. Dunki is a big threat for Salar in North Indian locations like Punjab, where Prashant Neel’s last film KGF did well. But Dunki and Salaar are ultimately two films. Therefore, the makers of both the films hope to get different audiences.
