“Out of stock – Natrel dairy product”. Consumers have hit their noses on empty milk fridges in recent days due to the strike by 250 employees at the Saint-Laurent factory in Montreal, launched by the Agropur union last Monday.

“Certain formats or products will not be available on shelves during the strike,” confirmed to Journal Mylène Dupéré, vice-president of communications at Agropur, Friday.

In recent hours, The newspaper observed in several supermarkets, including a Metro in Repentigny, that the fridges were often empty.

“It’s a big headache”

At the Grocery Retailers Association (ADA), many members have raised concerns in recent days as the holiday season approaches.

“It’s a big headache in the run-up to Christmas for retailers. It creates uncertainty,” shares Journal his spokesperson Samuel Bouchard.

To avoid milk shortages, Agropur claims to have a “contingency plan” to process its milk in other of its factories. The dairy giant also says it is “prioritizing” its products.

“We will take all actions required to maintain the best possible level of service for our customers in this situation,” assured Mylène Dupéré, refusing however to quantify the quantities involved for competitive reasons.

It is the managers on duty who ensure that the milk comes out of the silos and redirects it to other factories in the group to avoid waste. The collective agreement for employees of Agropur’s Saint-Laurent plant expired in September.
